This somewhat mysterious Pinot Noir requires a second glass to 'get it'. It is "preservative free" - it's had no added sulphur; the fermentation was indigenous and there was no fining nor filtration. It's an elegant wine that's actually a joy to drink. It's plush yet offers lovely focus on the mid-palate; the palate offers up sweet raspberry fruit and violets suggestive of cold maceration and there's a savory, smoky undertone that lingers on the finish, which is a common thread you'll find on the clay/limesone soils of Waipara. Linear with some meaty tannins and long length. A great effort from a relatively new player, who also doubles as a Christchurch painter and plasterer!
