Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou

Bordeaux blend - 1961

When you hang out with Jancis Robinson and Fiona Morrison - the lady of Le Pin - chateaux owners open fine wines like this at dinner. Now in his 80s, Jean-Michel Cazes hosted dinner for us at the family's Caf? Lavinale in the hamlet of Bages and opened what was my first-ever Bordeaux wine from 1961. THis was history in a glass and yes, it was bloody delicious, all smoky log fire, tomato, sweet dried fruit but not at all dried out. Startling concentration of fruit and very suave.
