The letter that I thought I would never receive arrived two weeks ago.
“On behalf of the institute I am delighted to be able to bring you the news that you have been awarded a pass in the Practical part of this year’s Master of Wine examination to add to the Theory pass which you already hold.” And it wasn’t a joke.
Relief and elation washed over me, shortly followed the realizationt that I now have to write a dissertation that I haven’t yet thought about. I didn’t want to tempt fate by thinking too hard about a dissertation, as the tasting exam was such as mountain to climb. But now I am faced with writing a synopsis with a literature review by mid November. So, here I am writing a blog about it instead of doing it. Procrastination is evil.
Having read Richard Hemming’s Diary of an MW student on Jancis Robinson’s site, it appears I have to keep quiet about my topic as it is treated as an examination and must be marked anonymously. But I have a very loose title and have started reading academic articles around the topic and been bamboozled by long technical words and economic theory. Sounds like I’m in for an exciting year!
Speaking of economics, one of the first things I said to my long-suffering other half upon opening the You Passed! Letter was “ooh, that’ll save us about $10,000 this year.” So, it seems you can take the girl out of Yorkshire but you can’t take Yorkshire out of the girl.
So, enough of the procrastination, I suppose I should be writing something worthy of a Master of Wine. I might go and put the kettle on first though…
