Wine & Shoes – what’s not to love?

Blog Posts Uncategorized

My partner (check out his spirits site The Sauce) took me away for a relaxing weekend to Martinborough which was a turn up for the books. But taking a wine journo to a wine region means the notepad comes on holiday too.

We ended up with an invite to the opening of the Wairarapa Wine Centre on Friday night = work.  Greytown’s former library had been turned into a cellar door for 13 cellar door-less wineries.  It looks like we’ll also be appearing in the local rag as the journalist assigned to this great news scoop was eager to take photos of the outsiders.  It’s a quirky town despite its Grey title-  most of the women wear crazy-coloured heels thanks to the local shoe shop and half the winemakers are Scots.

The centre has come together in just six weeks with ‘determined German’ winemaker Karl Johner leading the troops. Sitting on State Highway 2 on the New Zealand Wine Trail, this one-stop Wairarapa shop is likely to have plenty of tourists popping in on their way to Wellington. If you’re in the area, it’s open every day 1000-1800hrs and while you’re there, why not treat yourself to a pair of patent leather purple knee-high boots? Everyone needs a pair.
